Outdoor Exploratorium
Completed: 2009
Client: The Exploratorium
Funder: The National Science Foundation
The first page of the site presents an aerial panorama of Fort Mason Center with exhibits and ground level perspectives marked with clickable circular icons
Clicking on an exhibit marker produces a ground level panorama of the exhibit site and information about the exhibit, including a description, slideshow, related exhibits, and where applicable, video and audio descriptions. A pop-up map provides an overview of all exhibit locations. Clicking on an exhibit marker in the map takes you to that exhibit. Ambient audio recordings of the site play quietly in the background.
A pop-up widget-like display of current weather and tidal conditions at Fort Mason Center gives the user a sense of being there. Data is aggregated from NOAA SOAP services and a weatherunderground.com RSS feed.
The Outdoor Exploratorium Website provides a virtual exploration of Fort Mason Center in San Francisco and the exhibits developed onsite by the Exploratorium. The exhibits were designed to foster observations of subtle phenomena, and so the website endeavors to give the user a similar experience. Intentionally minimal, the site eschews obvious navigation in favor of subtly guided exploration. Users navigate through panoramic images of the Fort Mason Site to discover the exhibits and other content by clicking on circular icons they find in the panoramas. A pop-up interactive map of the area provides users with an overview of the exhibit locations and an alternate mode of accessing them. A live weather and tidal display gives users a sense of the current conditions at Fort Mason. New exhibits and content can be easily added to the Site by updating an XML file.
